Help me save Newsmap!

[ UPDATE 9:50 AM PST, 14 hours later: Newsmap saved! ]

Newsmap has been running for about 4 years now, it's been heavily linked from all around the internet and has always had a really high number of daily hits. Since I've never required registration, I couldn't tell the exact number of recurring users. All this time I've kept Newsmap completely free of advertising, and I've used my own pocket money to pay for the really high bandwidth costs.

As of today, November 15th 2007, Google decided to pull the plug on it by shutting down access to the parser I use to scrape their HTML. Newsmap basically reads their site and takes all the bits needed to create a one screen visualization of all the news they themselves scrape from the rest of the internet. Google offers RSS feeds for some of their pages, however, the data required to create the visualization does not exist there. The Newsmap HTML parser is key to grab Google News data.

It'd be such a pity to see it end here!

If you feel you'd like to see Newsmap live longer, please add your name and location in the comments. Hopefully we'll get to a good number so they'll notice us.

If you have a blog, please help me spread the word by linking to this post.

And of course if anyone out there has a friend at Google with whom I could have a word, please hook me up! If they gave me a chance to talk, I'm sure they'll understand.

Thank you so much!

cheers!

.marcos

[ UPDATE 11:45 PM PST]

I'm now in touch with the Google News team.
We are actively trying to figure something out.
Thanks everyone for all your support!

[ UPDATE 9:50 AM PST, 14 hours later]

We are back on track!

Newsmap is back online and very healthy.
Infinite gratitude goes to the Google News team for their quick response.
And again, thanks everyone for your support!

If you notice any further hiccups please let me know.

I can't believe newsmap is shut down. I used the site every week for my governement classes current events. It's a great resource and way to see what the big issues being covered are. I just went to do this weeks event and now I don't know what I can do to find what the biggest issue in the US is. I hope google rethinks their shut down of the site and understand that students like me use it for the soul purpose of education!!!

this is bullsh*t. I love your site and Google can go eat a d*ck for pulling access to their info. what happened to all the pomp and cheer about a free net neutral internet. I mean news is news. their own site is an aggregate that sends the user to the respective news source. this is like saying leftover dogsh*t on the sidewalk is theirs because they smelled it first.

Newsmap has been a source for news that doesn't cater exclusively to the small variety of "news" that the mainstream media broadcasts on the networks. I like knowing more than what's spoon fed on television.

Newsmap has been my homepage for the past two years. It is essential internet that should remain part of the web. Google is doing a major disservice to itself for pulling the parser. The fact that Google news is itself a feed makes this act quite ironically funny. This may be a case of illusions of grandeur on Google's part. While they have transformed the world wide web, Google should certainly not be able to control it. In fact, they dont. None of the feeds belong to them and the parser, if it is code, is not proprietary. Free the web, save Newsmap!

What!! No more newsmap? How am I suppose to get my daily news? As a member of the media, I depend on newsmap for links to sites, publications, and writers that I normally wouldn't be able to find. In a day of American corporate news monopolies, newsmap gave a glimps of hope that there was a way for the people to vote on what is their opinion of the most important news story of the day. Google selling out by ending the newsmap is just another example of big money not wanting to do the right thing for the people and journalism, if it means more money or more friends in Washington for them. I have been a avid user of Newsmap for the last 4 months and have really enjoyed the fact that I can view news from everywhere! Sure beats having to go to different sites and surf endlessly through pop-ups, advertisements and just general garbage just to view the news. If the trend continues in this direction by Google, I foresee a future of anarchy and viral programming, kinda makes you wish the old BBS Bulletin Boards were still up and running.

OMG! NEWSMAP! NOOOO! I have had newsmap as my homepage ever since i heard about it this summer. I check it out several times a day, not only to get my news in general, but to see the overall trends in news reporting (what the media in general finds important vs. non-important). For someone who spouts nothing but "free information for all", you would think Google would embrace something as revolutionary and useful as newsmap.

I'm in Vancouver, Canada.
Newsmap is the number one position in my Favorites folder of my browser.
I routinely look at it 2-3 times per day to see what's going on in the world.
From there, I usually read a couple of articles each day.
I think I can understand Google... maybe.. it may just be because there isn't any advertising (theirs!) on the site... just the news links.
Unfortunately, that's why I loved this thing... and why I tell everyone about it.
Dang.
I REALLY do not want to go to a news portal site and be bombarded with cr*p advertising while trying to see what is happening in the world.
This is trully sad.
I hope it comes back.
I won't take it out of my favourites for quite some time.
Hey, Google, let this go, okay? We like it. It works. Be nice.

Sorry, I should have explained about it a bit more you are right.

Basically they've blocked my server IP address from accessing their site. True, I've been using an 'undocumented' feature, and that is reading their HTML to extract the bits needed to create the visualization.

At the time when my parser attempts to read from Google News I receive back a 403 error.

If the data needed to create the visualization existed through an officially supported channel, I'd be more than happy to move there, but again that hasn't been made available yet.

I have absolutely nothing against Google, and they are completely in their right if they want to shut me down. I love Google news and I'll continue using it as much as I've done for the past 4 years.

Of course if there is a chance we can work something out, I'd be more than delighted to discuss.

Hey everyone! I just got in touch with the Goolge News team. We are trying to figure something out.
Thanks a lot for all your support!

Google buy into this, splash some cash to keep this going. It's a really neat and original way of displaying the news. Don't be the bully and pull it, go with it and embrace it. It makes sense and you really know it, so go with it.

David Drummond, step in and make this happen please.

Hi Marcos, I know someone at Google and have asked them to look into this. I am sure it is an oversight...if anything they should look to acquire the technology so it can be developed further...

Brilliant product.

SAVE NEWSMAP! Google, you're close to ruling the world already, why don't you let some of your already loyal Google lovers see your news reader displayed in another, beautiful way? There's no reason to shut down newsmap, on the contrary why don't you buy the creator out, send him home smiling, and keep newsmap going!

I hope you can get it and Newsmap never dies :o)

Google, shame on you. It's as though Apple Computer is the Emperor and you're his evil apprentice. With such an absurd stock price, you think you'd have something better to do than to screw with someone who FINALLY has a better idea than YOU DO. At some point, you uber-nerds will be so full of yourselves that own spines will snap. Get over it, Google, and back off. You do a far better job poaching Microsoft's employees than you do in the jealosy department.

I love the site. Talking about data visualization often puts people to sleep until they actually see what it means in the real world.

Your excellent site has long been the first "This is why the net is wonderful" destination.

I trust that you and the google news team will figure out an infinite win position and keep NewsMap alive!

Newsmap is one of the best Treemap representations ever, and an highly significant contribution to the field of Information Visualization. I truly hope you can solve this issue with Google Marcos. There's no way we would let Newsmap go down without a fight. In my view, what Google should do is embrace and subsidize the project, and even sponsor possible extensions of the tool to include alternative visualizations of News, or other Google data sources.

Best,

eFirst off, I want to thank you more making such an innovative site. I've used it everyday as my primary source of news.

I honestly think google wants to shut it down because it does not align with their business plans. Newsmap does not have any advertising and the content is not "modified" based on your geographic location (ie, China). Also, it could be due to the fact that newsmap is consuming some of google's resources, and they are not being rewarded for it (just an assumption).

Let's face it, Google is a corporation, and just like any other corporation, the needs of the shareholder come first. Therefore, any actions made to boost the bottom line, regardless of whose "blood" is spilt, is acceptable.

I hope you patented your idea. It's innovative and provides a great user experience. I just hope google doesn't take your idea and make their own version of it without giving you some sort of royalty fee.

Best of luck!
