Newsmap 2.0

Long time overdue, here comes newsmap 2.0

The new url is at http://newsmap.jp
Still working on a couple of bugs and really trying to push some features I still think as essential.

Before:

After:

New in 2.0 is:

  • rectangularized treemap layout: To accommodate text properly, cells are as rectangular as possible, this there's more room for headlines without chopping them off in several lines.
  • search as you type: try the new search on the top right, see how newsmap updates.
  • deep linking: you can now deep link to any state of the app. just try updating your view, and notice how the url changes. You can grab and share that url with anyone.
More to come:
  • custom tabs: save your search query as a new tab
  • custom feeds: add your own RSS feeds to the map
  • stats: learn more about your news and how you consume them!
And much, much more!

This is one of the best representation of news...

I used in my website through widgetbox. There is a message now on top of it saying newsmap is moving What does it mean? How can I use usemap without that message?

Thanks

Wow, what a surprise that you're still working on this. I operate a hallway kiosk and this is the number one draw to it. I'm excited to put the new version up. I'm also interested in your note that I might be able to add my own RSS feeds. It would be neat to add internal company feeds to it. I don't see anyplace in the interface to do that, though. What am I missing? Thanks again!

I do prefer the old colour scheme. The colours were much 'fresher' and punchier.

Congratulations, it looks fantastic!

One quibble, though: I don't think the new white popup boxes are an improvement. There's very little available real estate in the interface that doesn't trigger them, they always obscure at least part of a neighboring cell, and the photo load introduces an unpredictably-delayed secondary visual snap. I'd ditch them altogether.

...or make them appear on click only.

Is there any way to pick a specific time and look at the state of Newsmap then? I think it would be really cool to be able to see how stories emerge over time; I think it would be a really amazing way to see the progression of things.

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

I wish I could have Newsmap for my screensaver.

I keep getting a message that says connection interrupted, I deleted the widget altogether until it is back up and running. Am I the only one getting this message or is everyone getting a server error?

I had never heard of newsmap until your redesign was reported on a blog I read. I'm very impressed!

It's excellent but I have the same problem as the first poster i.e. I use this as a widget (http://www.eclaireur.net/netvibes/) on Netvibes and there is a message now on top of it saying newsmap is moving. When clicking on the new site I get the message "Oh no! Seems like you do not have the Flash 9 player plugin installed." but in fact it's up to date. No attempt to embed the new site on Netvibes has succeeded :( Please help as I really don't want to lose this excellent tool.

Thanks for this great service. With it, it's impossible to miss the bg headlines. Im quite relieved to know that you're moving on to bigger and bolder things for Newsmap.

If i could request one feature, it would be middle mouse button click to open the news on the background of my firefox.

Newsmap (the new one) (on IE on Vista) doesn't seem to automatically update. Am I missing something? Is there a place where the auto-update speed is controlled?

I cant manage to embed it into netvibes, sometimes it works, but now it works no longer. It tells me i need flash player 9, but I have it, if i open a new tab and fire up the site, everything works great. I even managed to embed it in Firefox, but not in Safari :/

How about a version running as a media center add-in ... seems perfect for big screen tv's ...
